Turning the Tide’
by Rupert Creed
The story of Hull’s 1968 trawler tragedy & the fishermen’s wives campaign for safety. Based on the testimonies of the men and women involved.
In the winter of 1968, three Hull trawlers were lost in quick succession with only one survivor. The wives & mothers of Hull’s close-knit fishing community embarked upon a national campaign to improve safety on trawlers. In the space of a few weeks they forced the government to bring in much needed reforms, but on the way they had to challenge deep rooted practices within the industry, and male prejudice against what was acceptable for working class women to achieve.
